<span style="color: black; font-family: AbcTeacher; font-size: medium;"><strong>Happy Tuesday!</strong></span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: AbcTeacher; font-size: medium;"><strong>For the last two weeks or so we’ve been hard at work on Fractions! My students are really getting into it. I had one student to tell me today that our classroom lights were fractions. We have three rows of lights and two of the rows were out at the end of the day while we had snack time. He replied “Ms. Arnold one-third of the lights are on.” Don’t you just love moments like this!</strong></span><br />

“Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof. Clap along along if you feel like happiness is the truth…”<br />
Happy Monday!!! I’m EXTRA happy because I’m on Spring Break! But like probably every other teacher out there I’m already batting around ideas about next school year…come on I know I’m not the only one.<br />
I must confess that this school year my blogging has been…well....blah.<br />
<img src="http://www.mansanity.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/bored.jpg" height="192" width="320" /><br />
<br />
I’ve been waiting and waiting for inspiration to kick in and it’s still MIA. So I figured maybe next year a change was in order, which lead me to the decision to give my classroom a total makeover, maybe that will kick the inspiration up a notch. So I’ve been doing a bit of pre-planning.<br />
<br />
<strong><u>Disclosure: If you are one of those people who doesn’t like preparing your space before the kids arrive, if you think it's not good pedagogy, blasphemous, sacrilegious, or if you have some aversion to the dreaded "cute" word, then please stop reading. I'm totally okay with that.</u></strong><br />
<br />
But if you’re like me and want just a touch of inspiration then please read on. Let me just say I prepare the space and my student's work is like the icing on the cake. I have to live in my classroom for nine months, five days a week for 7-10 hours daily so I’m just saying.<br />
<br />
Step 1: Scour the blogisphere for ideas that speak to you, tickle your fancy, get the creative ball rolling and all that jazz. I must say that <a href="http://firstgradeblueskies.blogspot.com/">First Grade Blue Skies</a> is my current favorite for tons of ideas for my classroom space. I’ve also just discovered <a href="http://the-pink-pineapple.blogspot.com/">The Pink Pineapple</a>, love her Instagram pictures and I love how her student’s work is everywhere! If you’d like to check these ladies out then click on their buttons below.<br />
<a href="http://firstgradeblueskies.blogspot.com/"><img alt="Photobucket" src="http://imageshack.us/a/img27/2411/rpln.jpg" height="174" width="174" /></a> <a href="http://the-pink-pineapple.blogspot.com/"><img alt="My Logo" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oQnw8LGqGxM/UsTQV20-MFI/AAAAAAAAANw/iP5ELCoGav4/s1600/pink%2Bpineapple%2Blogo.jpg" height="169" width="169" /></a><br />
<br />
Step 2: Decide on a color scheme. I’m going with a sort of light teal, lavender, a touch of hot pink and black as an accent. I created the slides I’m about to show you in PowerPoint. I found some backgrounds in my clipart collection and started from there. I’m thinking Chevron and/or polkadots?????<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-qMBVImLD0IY/Uy9MBhS9yHI/AAAAAAAAE8k/4_Vvtsjt4b4/s1600-h/image%25255B5%25255D.png"><img alt="image" border="0" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-t7DtuEWupC0/Uy9MCfGF4AI/AAAAAAAAE8s/KuyRtID_7jw/image_thumb%25255B3%25255D.png?imgmax=800" height="299" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="image" width="379" /></a><br />
<br />
Step 3: Copy and paste ideas against the backdrop of your color scheme and type notes as needed. If I copy and paste an idea I’m more likely to remember it, and I may not do it exactly like the picture, but it’s the idea of it that I’m interested in. I also copy and paste things I’d like to order from places like Really Good Stuff or Lakeshore. Also, having my color scheme in mind helps when I go into Target, Walmart and The Dollar Tree.<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-CW6NgR6RFlQ/Uy9MD-kkW5I/AAAAAAAAE80/q2ITvWVPelo/s1600-h/Slide1%25255B4%25255D.png"><img alt="Slide1" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-oEz2huwW7C8/Uy9MErkpQtI/AAAAAAAAE84/EKzlJbNgCEc/Slide1_thumb%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" height="341" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Slide1" width="436" /></a><br />
<br />
Step 4: Keep adding ideas until I’m satisfied! I know lots of people probably do this same thing, but I just wanted to share my little ole process. Now fingers crossed that it turns like like the picture I have in my head of my classroom space for next year!<br />

I can't believe I haven't posted in four weeks!<div>See....what had happened was.....truthfully haven't been in a blogging mood lately. Does anyone else ever feel that way??</div><div><br></div><div> I am also having computer issues, this time it's my internal hard drive that needs replacing. I have been ignoring the inevitable, but alas it's time, but I backed up all of my files!</div><div><br></div><div>I'm sure by now you know we had a bit of a snow event in AL. If you follow me on Instagram, then you know my story. The weather people said it would be just a dusting in the central part of the state, but that dusting turned into 2 inches. I know you're saying two inches...pishaw!! </div><div><br></div><div>But people this is Alabama. Snow, ice and Alabama drivers do not mix! Around 10am the principal came over the intercom and told teachers to start calling parents, because we were getting out at 11:00. I stayed until my last child left, then looked out of the back door of my classroom and this is what I saw!</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yD86Er6Lrfg/Uu3a-wLuC-I/AAAAAAAAE4s/OvDUaEWUoCo/s640/blogger-image--851934958.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yD86Er6Lrfg/Uu3a-wLuC-I/AAAAAAAAE4s/OvDUaEWUoCo/s640/blogger-image--851934958.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-qPsc-e8a2fI/Uu3bWvxs3yI/AAAAAAAAE40/vh9MdArnbK0/s640/blogger-image--1575317287.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-qPsc-e8a2fI/Uu3bWvxs3yI/AAAAAAAAE40/vh9MdArnbK0/s640/blogger-image--1575317287.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">My school is surrounded by hills, so there was no way I was getting home on Tuesday! I walked with one of my co-workers through the neighborhood to meet our rides. She slipped once...I slipped once, and we laughed about it. I told her she'd make a good wilderness guide because she kept checking on me, making sure we stayed in the grass and avoided ice patches. I think she has a second career in the bag. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Most importantly all the teachers and students got home safely. That was an adventure I would never like to experience again! I am glad I can laugh about it..now. We were out of school for the rest of the week, our 100th was on Tuesday, and we didn't get a chance to celebrate, so we have some catching up to do.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So there is my little adventure. If you are like me and have two or three days till Thanksgiving Break (our last day is Tuesday) I’ve created a little word work freebie for you. We have been studying long vowels and sometimes it can be akin to thrashing your head against a brick wall over, and over, and over, and…..well you get the picture.</p> <p>So I’m adding in this little extra activity into work on words this week. If you’d like a copy click on the picture above. Have a wonderful week and a Happy Thanksgiving!!!</p> Oceans of First Grade Funhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05159905273550492157noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4110641142057953066.post-62570452421137058252013-11-11T15:00:00.000-06:002013-11-11T15:51:41.973-06:00Time Saver Tips<p><a href="http://imbloghoppin.blogspot.com/"><img style="float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; margin-right: auto" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AQu6TybDHbY/UnwP02hD2rI/AAAAAAAAKHk/-Y-QxqedsNg/s640/Slide2.jpg" width="485" height="366"></a></p> <p>Okay I’m linking up with <a href="http://imbloghoppin.blogspot.com/">Blog Hoppin’</a> to share a few time saving tips. Mine are not that spectacular. </p> <p>The first one is this baby from Lakeshore.</p> <p><img style="float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; margin-right: auto" alt="All-Purpose Teacher’s Organizer" src="http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/media/images/products/full/tt927_f.jpg"></p> <p>I plan for the next week on each Thursday. I end up staying at school late and making all of my activity sheets, charts, copies, story problems, etc. I place them all in my bins and I’m all set. I love it because I’m not taking my entire planning time looking for something I need. I even place my read alouds in the bins. </p> <p>Then on Friday after school I take out any of the extra copies, directions, patterns, whatever I used that week and place it in a file folder. I label the folder with the week’s date then put the folder in my file cabinet. This helps so much for the next year because I can see everything I used and I don’t have to hunt for copies or try and remember what we did during that week! I’ve been doing this for the last three years and it saves me so much time!</p> <p> </p> <p>The second one is my word wall. </p> <p>I couldn’t find a close up picture but if you follow me on Instagram then you’ve seen it.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-iYxN4DBhNxU/UoFRaLawSUI/AAAAAAAAEzU/tjGgMxcBVXk/s1600-h/image%25255B2%25255D.png"><img title="image" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="image" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-3mVVh-W2N34/UoAgMhGaOqI/AAAAAAAAEzc/bvZugdRCsS0/image_thumb%25255B1%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="499" height="269"></a></p> <p>Every year I’m always taking the cards down and inevitability the paper gets torn, or it fades. So this summer I got my wonderful mother to make quilted squares. I staple-gunned them up and now all I have to do is put my words up using a push pins and BAM!!!! no drama, no more changing the paper each year!</p> <p> </p> <p>Lastly is my Assessment binder. This little baby goes with me everywhere. During the beginning of the year I stock it with running record forms, progress monitoring sheets, ABC charts, sight word charts, anything I need for assessments during the year. Mid year I check my supplies again and re-stock anything I’m running short on. So all I have to do is grab and go!</p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-OmSDnX0n6OQ/UoAgNohtwHI/AAAAAAAAEyk/sTr0DaKgE8Y/s1600-h/IMG_1730%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1730" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1730" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Hyq6mOhC8OM/UoAgOX15UGI/AAAAAAAAEys/oqFMyDsMx3E/IMG_1730_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="395" height="308"></a> <p>I hope I’ve provided you with some useful tips! I posted a few pictures yesterday of my small groups, individual reading conference and intervention binder, and a few teachers asked for a copy. It’s nothing fancy just something I whipped up to help me plan for small groups and intervention. I also included a copy of my planning pages for the week. I hand write all the pages so it’s strictly for me. The planning sheet just gives you an idea of the layout of my day.<br />

I’m just going to get straight to it! We’ve been up to quite a bit since I last blogged…so get ready for a lengthy post with lots of pictures.</p> <p>Owls</p> <p>We just wrapped up our two week owl unit and we had a blast! The highlight was dissecting owl pellets! My students were so excited! Here are a few pictures.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ah2A5w8KntM/UmxuYNV_UrI/AAAAAAAAEqc/LtAW8erTNng/s1600-h/IMG_3406%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_3406" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; It’s a really quick read and it’s all about putting the Math Practice Standards into action in your classroom. Like I’ve said before these practice standards are really the meat of CC Math. and I’m trying really hard this year to make sure they are present in every area of my math instruction. </p> <p>Here’s a simple activity that I’ve started and it’s so easy to implement! It’s called Focus on the Question. This activity related to Make Sense of Problems and Persevere in Solving them. This is a simple classroom technique that addresses multiple problem solving skills. </p> <p>You present a piece of data to the class on Monday then on subsequent days you pose a different problem in which students must use some or all of the data. You talk each day about what you are being asked to solve, what data will help them solve it and how they would go about solving it. The class discussion centers around not the answers, but on the steps to solve the problem. So I created this flip chart. Each day we discussed the problem being asked and what steps we would take to solve them. It only takes about 10 minutes and we discuss the questions during our Math Morning Meeting.</p> <p>Monday’s Question</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-nDZW7LPMyRw/Umxu3ItQ26I/AAAAAAAAEuc/qleaDHYg2rY/s1600-h/image%25255B4%25255D.png"><img title="image" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="image" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-i9SFHKP3EBI/Umxu4PNMI4I/AAAAAAAAEuk/q7LMUUzeMeY/image_thumb%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="383" height="300"></a></p> <p>Tuesday’s Question</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-gfGwLktJBZQ/Umxu4k-G4zI/AAAAAAAAEus/IfB5G2aC9I0/s1600-h/image%25255B9%25255D.png"><img title="image" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="image" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-t0njOavzgHg/Umxu5UFhZBI/AAAAAAAAEu0/fruVr0dlVak/image_thumb%25255B5%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="368" height="288"></a></p> <p>Wednesday’s Question</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-2FuN4ZESFGI/Umxu7GTan0I/AAAAAAAAEu8/HcqKrssWGcU/s1600-h/image%25255B14%25255D.png"><img title="image" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="image" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-ZoQnCst8dV8/Umxu7n7-SyI/AAAAAAAAEvE/wnQRephgbiY/image_thumb%25255B8%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="370" height="290"></a></p> <p>Thursday’s Question</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-aApqxRGnMF8/Umxu83b1-CI/AAAAAAAAEvM/MsrUwpqL2u0/s1600-h/image%25255B19%25255D.png"><img title="image" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="image" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-U4akQcE3HrE/Umxu986U7aI/AAAAAAAAEvU/O__m5JQz53E/image_thumb%25255B11%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="362" height="284"></a></p> <p>Friday’s Question</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Yfb76Ab49qc/Umxu_aBjvLI/AAAAAAAAEvc/CpJUgNT16Cw/s1600-h/image%25255B24%25255D.png"><img title="image" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="image" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-oEFJikq0yn4/UmxvAcNY5uI/AAAAAAAAEvk/hLTvwH51gL4/image_thumb%25255B14%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="361" height="283"></a></p> <p>My students really go into the discussion and it allowed me to assess what they knew and what they were thinking. I plan to add this as a weekly activity during morning meeting.</p> <p>I also try to have a different situational story problem each week. Here’s what we worked on this week.</p> <p>Problem: Ms. Arnold went to Target to get Halloween treat bags. The bags came in three bags per pack. If there are 21 students in our classroom, how many packs of bags will Ms. Arnold need to buy? They had to show their thinking using pictures, words or numbers. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-adEcwbEkoms/UmxvBP2yTkI/AAAAAAAAEvs/Lnv9ZDYEhAo/s1600-h/IMG_3574%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_3574" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_3574" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-A_YCZ9YoYUc/UmxvBmvBW9I/AAAAAAAAEvw/8OetQ9PPrJU/IMG_3574_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="365" height="373"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-VJ1olB9tk4Q/UmxvCWiOHGI/AAAAAAAAEv8/er5QWVmHb54/s1600-h/IMG_3575%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_3575" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_3575" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-hlHvqjBzcCs/UmxvCqK7y9I/AAAAAAAAEwA/i1dTCbx_rRM/IMG_3575_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="359" height="372"></a></p> <p>I’ve also started creating differentiated story problems for my students. The topic was on CC Math Practice Standard number 1 which is: </p> <p align="center"><strong><font size="6">Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.</font></strong> <p>I am working really hard on providing my students with classroom experiences in which they can do just that. The math practice standards are the most important part of CC math, a least it’s what I think. I always look to them as a guide when I’m planning math lessons. <p>So as I driving home I began to brainstorm the different types of problem solving activities I could do with my students. I wanted it to be engaging on all levels…and boy do I have a wide variety of those. So here is the first activity I came up with. I leveled them so that all of my students could be successful. <p>First we did a few examples on the Promethean board. Then I handed out the sheets. They had to work for 5 minutes alone, and they could use any math tool they thought would help them. Then after five minutes I grouped the different levels together and they discussed their solutions. Then we shared out as a whole group. <p>I forgot to snap some photos of their thinking, but they really did well with it. If you’d like to try something like this in your classroom click o the picture and grab a copy. I didn’t do any cutifying but I hope you can use it anyway! It was quick and easy to implement but I saw a lot of thinking going on. Let me know what you think. <p> <p>Level 1 <p><a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B618ahbgtlRwTUxRcXp4ZlYzX1k/edit?usp=sharing"><img title="Slide2" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Slide2" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-DVD-9-p4aZw/UldJiINPcFI/AAAAAAAAEpQ/gnBpPpcXalI/Slide2%25255B6%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="365" height="286"></a> <p> <p>Level 2</p> <p><a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B618ahbgtlRwTUxRcXp4ZlYzX1k/edit?usp=sharing"><img title="Slide1" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Slide1" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-zr9t3pd80q8/UldJirRhhhI/AAAAAAAAEpY/ZvQKY5jydEs/Slide1%25255B5%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="358" height="281"></a></p> <p> </p> <p>Level 3</p> <p><a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B618ahbgtlRwTUxRcXp4ZlYzX1k/edit?usp=sharing"><img title="Slide3" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Slide3" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-x8Q4_VS4BHg/UldJi0gmfII/AAAAAAAAEpg/n9-JcnE_h1k/Slide3%25255B5%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="363" height="284"></a></p> <p>Here is a video we watched on The Teaching Channel…Holla if you LUV The Teaching Channel! Three days closer to Friday! Ha!</p> <p>Today during our math morning meeting Promethean Board style, I posed this problem to my first graders.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-MTM8R3OASsQ/UkIu6SQZSaI/AAAAAAAAEnw/wjdAEB-6TdU/s1600-h/image%25255B9%25255D.png"><img title="image" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="image" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/--r1t-SeGa3s/UkIu6wbMuTI/AAAAAAAAEn0/jpXc04XqOhc/image_thumb%25255B5%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="434" height="339"></a></p> <p> </p> <p>I called a few students up to show different ways that all of the children could fit onto the bunk bed, some on the top and some on the bottom. After we did this I let them pair up and I gave them different numbers to find combinations for. My more advanced students were given a larger number. They recorded as many combinations as they could in their Math Journals. </p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-oREkT6IxTCM/UkIu7XMHjSI/AAAAAAAAEoA/8tqiPmMbW3Q/s1600-h/photo%252520%2525285%252529%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="photo (5)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="photo (5)" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-TOIdE6T6fus/UkIu7y26yPI/AAAAAAAAEoE/JOCu4zg87xk/photo%252520%2525285%252529_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="243" height="325"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-DzVWHlvDNMw/UkIu8MnHsSI/AAAAAAAAEoQ/pxKDapEm1bY/s1600-h/photo%252520%2525286%252529%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="photo (6)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="photo (6)" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-layZ6JkoLe8/UkIu8kMqDlI/AAAAAAAAEoU/WjzADgotIf0/photo%252520%2525286%252529_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="251" height="336"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-P2JdqsaBw38/UkIu88W69HI/AAAAAAAAEoc/qo7jKVtYiEI/s1600-h/photo%252520%2525287%252529%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="photo (7)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="photo (7)" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-8Su5wq4NL4o/UkIu9WiIf3I/AAAAAAAAEok/0-9xzfSIXEY/photo%252520%2525287%252529_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="251" height="336"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-e6bce3iMd04/UkIu91BVuaI/AAAAAAAAEow/DfwWnvat56c/s1600-h/photo%252520%25252812%252529%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="photo (12)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="photo (12)" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-J4CoY9y7XXc/UkIu-VVmLII/AAAAAAAAEo0/Lj7oU_D0ybc/photo%252520%25252812%252529_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="249" height="333"></a></p> <p align="center">I got this idea directly from <a href="http://www.k-5mathteachingresources.com/">this website</a>. Last week and this week we are talking about story structure. With an emphasis on character analysis. We’ve read Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks. </p> <p>Today we did a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood and tomorrow we will read one of the books from this series!</p> <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Honestly-Red-Riding-Hood-Rotten/dp/1404870466/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379989525&sr=8-1&keywords=little+red+was+rotten"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Yc0ECsXrL._SL500_AA300_.jpg" width="204" height="204"></a> <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Seriously-Cinderella-Is-Annoying-Stepmother/dp/1404870482/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_y"><img src="http://jeanporter.cmswiki.wikispaces.net/file/view/Seriously,_Cinderella_is_SO_Annoying--The_Story_of_C._as_told_by_the_Wicked_Stepmother.jpg/288859551/Seriously,_Cinderella_is_SO_Annoying--The_Story_of_C._as_told_by_the_Wicked_Stepmother.jpg" width="202" height="202"></a></p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Trust-Me-Jacks-Beanstalk-Stinks/dp/1404870504/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_z"><img src="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT0kZwge4RHgQp0xP5r2hKn-1XjEllp6X4Y58dYj420zraKL7Lq" width="201" height="201"></a><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Believe-Me-Goldilocks-Rocks-Story/dp/140487044X/ref=pd_sim_b_2"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FEgxHuILyG8/TnqUlpAwjoI/AAAAAAAAH6g/rTDoMMAVFRE/s400/goldiclocksrocks.jpg" width="201" height="201"></a></p> <p>I love these books! They are in the same vein as The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. I scooped them up from Amazon. I figured what a perfect opportunity to introduce a little opinion writing. In Little Red was Rotten the Wolf tells the reader that he’s a vegetarian, and if it were apple season he wouldn’t have eaten Little Red….yeah right!</p> <p>Tomorrow we’ll complete this during whole group time.</p> <p align="center">Click on the picture for your freebie!</p> <p><a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B618ahbgtlRwSTd0ckdPbkpyVmM/edit?usp=sharing"><img title="Slide1" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Slide1" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-bXLf6xDxrRM/UkD4hvDjuoI/AAAAAAAAEnY/obHXQ31SVlw/Slide1%25255B11%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="268" height="363"></a></p> <p>I also got a few emails about sharing our apple graph, so I have that for you too!</p> <p><a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B618ahbgtlRwTkp4S0VtbFZBRVE/edit?usp=sharing"><img title="Slide1" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Slide1" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-zkKEiZSQaV0/UkD4hzuN8GI/AAAAAAAAEng/XooXbzSn2aU/Slide1%25255B10%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="366" height="292"></a></p> <p>Have a terrific Tuesday!</p> Oceans of First Grade Funhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05159905273550492157noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4110641142057953066.post-58612793061942451242013-09-16T20:56:00.000-05:002013-09-17T16:52:34.639-05:00Apples and Testing Out My Blogger AppJust a quick post to the kickoff to our two week trip to Apple Town..."Won't you take me to Apple Town..." I can’t believe I’ve been back at school for three weeks! The time has just flown by!<br />
Tuesdays in my class is a day without Specials (music, art, Spanish) so I’m able to have a longer math block. I always like to feature some sort of big problem solving activity, which is usually linked to literature or what’s going on in our classroom. Here are a few examples.<br />
I love the book One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab. <br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/One-Snail-Ten-Crab-Counting/dp/0763626317/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1378596075&sr=1-1&keywords=one+is+a+snail+ten+is+a+crab"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61ZSSJDJ0JL._SX260_.jpg" style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></a><br />
It really gets the students thinking about skip counting and counting efficiently. After reading the book for a few days I gave them this problem to solve.<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-iNcCe5ZJ8qU/UivC321979I/AAAAAAAAEjU/G-Bqs6DfFRI/s1600-h/STF_3935%25255B1%25255D%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="STF_3935[1]" border="0" height="262" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-cuH4T4x7LCk/UivC4Yg4NRI/AAAAAAAAEjc/ck7atCkfz2A/STF_3935%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="STF_3935[1]" width="334" /></a><br />
One week we read Rooster’s Off to See the World and completed this problem solving activity.<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-zo4XA_RaUWU/UivC40vxPaI/AAAAAAAAEjk/i8yltxFc4bg/s1600-h/ML1%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="ML1" border="0" height="269" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-PUUnN52OXRE/UivC5Og6_CI/AAAAAAAAEjs/Oug3g3eKJZU/ML1_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="ML1" width="364" /></a> I think I got this idea from Marilyn Burns. I’ve loved her professional books since I first started oh so long ago! If you haven’t used any of her products, starting with her Math and Literature series of books would be a great way to get your feet wet.<br />

<br />
On Tuesday I gave them this classroom based problem to solve. I forgot to snap pictures of their work. The class earned ten points for following classroom rules, and being complimented by other teachers and administrators in the building. I let them vote on which treat I would bring. We used the graph as our weekly graphing activity. Then the next day I let them have a go at the problem I posed.<br />

If you’d like a copy of the three activities we’ve done so far, click on the picture below.<br />

We’ve also started our weekly poems. I love the My Very Own Poetry Collection books, by Betsy Franco. I have the kindergarten and first grade editions.<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Very-Poetry-Collection-First-Grade/dp/1567850626/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378598476&sr=8-1&keywords=My+Collection+of+first+Grade+Poems"><img height="283" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FOgGaBhSL._SX260_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_.jpg" width="235" /></a> <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Very-Own-Poetry-Collection-Kindergartners/dp/1567850618/ref=pd_sim_b_4"><img height="272" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41Uz3G5PPPL._SX260_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_.jpg" width="224" /></a><br />
I usually type them up for use on my Promethean board. On one page I’ll leave out the high frequency words, then the next page will have blanks so that they can create their own poem.<br />

Then on Fridays we illustrate the original poem and place it in our poetry journals.<br />
<br />
I haven’t taken as many pictures as I usually do, but here are a few snapshot from the past three weeks. I will try to do better for the next post.<br />
