More Arctic Stuff

Okay so I’m sitting in front of my computer trying to make my brain stop running ten thousand miles a minute, and I came up with this companion pack to my Arctic Animal Unit on Teachers Pay Teachers. But the best part is, it’s free!!! So if you’ve already gotten the unit, this would be great to go along with it.

Arctic Animals and Their Babies

The first page of the pack could be used as an extension to this book below. I picked up all my books from the library for my Arctic Animal unit and this was the first one I read…

Over in the Arctic: Where the Cold Winds Blow (Sharing Nature with Children Books)

I love it! Then I brainstormed a thousand other things I could do with it. I’ll post those later, but anyway use the first page of the pack with this book. The students choose an animal and writes the name of the baby animal. They would illustrate and then it could be used to make a class book, or bulletin board display.

The second page is a mini chart that lists Arctic animals and their babies. I’m going to use it for choral reading and enlarge it as an anchor chart. You could also copy the text onto sentence strips and write the names of the animals and their babies on separate cards. The students could match the adult animal with the baby.

The polar bear cards could be used as a concentration game, or placed on a ring…students could read them during free moments in the day. I like the idea of a concentration game because they are engaged and learning facts about the animals. The same goes for the penguin cards. I got the pic from doing a Google image search..so I’m not sure about copyright..I tried to find ones that were royalty free. But let me know if I should take them down.

The other two pages are vocabulary words associated with polar bears and penguins. I thought of letting my students create a mural of the Arctic and placing these vocabulary words all around it.

Enjoy
