This And That

Making Words and Word Work:

I made this Work on Words Activity for this week in small groups. The students roll an onset and chunk dice and have to decide if it’s a real word or nonsense word.

I purchased my set from Really Good Stuff…Love that company, and I especially love the EZ-Pay system they offer teachers.

Here is the recording sheet I gave them.  My teacher trainer in Reading Recovery always said be careful with the “it” chunk and the “uck” chunk when doing the Make and Break part of the lesson..so I caution you. Just saying.

Real Vs Alien Words -

Last week our phonics skill was long a: ai, ay. This week we are reviewing long a: ai and ai. Here is a Work on Words activity I created. Our story was not about the farm…thought it was cute clip art and went with it.

This week our phonics skill is long e: ea. Here is the Work on Words review activity they will complete next week.

Weekly Story

Last week our Reading Street story was Mama’s Birthday Present. I created this activity pack to go with the story. We did some whole group  and the rest small group.

Money

We are continuing our money unit in math. I gave each of the students a sheet of coins and a piggybank. They pulled a card and had to make that amount of money two different ways.

We jump started the holiday Friday with this Fun Friday math activity. The students estimated how many Conversation Hearts were in their boxes. Then they sorted, graphed and counted the candy hearts.

I went to The Dollar Tree yesterday to find gift bags for my games and found two items I plan to use this week.

Valentines Picks

These will make great Read the Room pointers. I bought one for each student. They will go great with my Hearts A Plenty Read the Room Kit.

Foam Hearts

I plan on giving my students a hand full of these and a recording sheet. They can write addition or subtraction story problems using their hearts.

The Fifth Day After Christmas

               Snowy Day Bingo1

On Fridays I usually let my students complete a Work on Words Activity with a partner or small group. This game would be perfect for that.

I hope you have found something useful during these past five days after Christmas. It’s crazy how much contentment I get from creating and sharing ideas.

I hope all of my followers will continue to be my faithful friends, and if you haven’t considered following me, I hope you’ll think about it.

To all my fellow teachers, Happy New Year! I wish you all a wonderful second half of the school year. I’ll be back after Winter Break to post pictures of our activities for our Arctic Animal Unit…unless I have a great idea to share before then.

Happy New Year

Five Days After Christmas

The First Day After Christmas

Last week my blog crossed the 20,000 page view mark. I know it’s not a lot for you seasoned bloggers out there, but it made me feel good. So as a thank you I’m going to post a new idea for the next five days after Christmas (you get it?) Smile. I wanted to post things you can use for those Winter Units after the break. I hope you enjoy them. Don’t forget to check back tomorrow.

This game is simple and easy to assemble. Just laminate the game boards and cards. Cut out the cards and follow the easy directions. I make several games like these for word families, sight words and math facts. My students love to play it over and over, and its also perfect for those fast finishers. If you want a student to play alone, just omit the word cards, and have them toss a pom pom or chip onto the board, then write a word with that chunk, or write a sentence using a word with the chunk.

Bingo Games

IMG_1869

Here are a few bingo games we play whole group, usually on Fridays. I’ll put several out and divide the students into small groups of four to five students. We set a timer and they rotate through all the games. It’s a good review of past skills or current ones.

The downloads are the directions and cover and the second downloads are the actual bingo boards. Above is a picture of how I store the games.
